A rare Helmut Illner V cello of beautifully flamed, well-aged Bosnian maple and Bavarian mountain spruce. Made in 2004, just before Helmut Illner's retirement, the V level was the top of his Stradivari pattern instruments.
This instrument is even across its entire range, possessing a strong European sound. it tone is colorful, allowing the player to pull a wide variety of emotions from it. The upper range is bright, easily projecting and filling a small room or large concert hall. The low end is rich and full, allowing the player to dig in and show off the low range of the cello. Playability is no issue as it is very responsive to subtleties in the bow and feels smooth under the left hand. Overall this is a stable, well-played-in German instrument with high quality, properly aged tonewoods.
Helmut Illner was one of the most well-known and influential luthiers at Erlanger, Germany. He had an excellent reputation for passion and professional knowledge in hand crafting strings instruments.
The ”Manchester International Cello Festival”, organized by The Royal Northern College in Manchester, is hailed as Europe’s most authoritative Violin Maker Competition. Helmut defeated more than thirty competitors from different countries and won the “Best of Sound” Award in 1992. The following year, Helmut submitted another cello to participate in the same competition. Once again, he won the Best Cello Tone Award. Helmut is the first luthier who won twice in same competition.
Helmut Illner strings instruments are hand crafted and hand-varnished. Each instrument has an even, fine and well-balanced tonal quality. The Bass has an extraordinary balanced sound, the higher registers clear and bright. His instruments respond easily and are very playable.

Buying a Cello Online from Linda West Cellos
All of our cellos (except for those on consignment or mezzo-forte instruments) come with a 14-day trial period. Once you receive your new cello, play it for 2 weeks, and if it's not "the one", contact us to discuss a return or replacement. Shipping costs back to us are the buyer's responsibility. Please see our FAQs for complete details.
Most cellos will come with a case and a bow. If you are shopping from a distance, Linda will select the most compatible bow for your cello by playing the instrument and trying out several bows. As for cases, most cellos will come with a standard hard case, which really depends on the availability. We often use Eastman CACL28 or CACL18 cases as our standard case. For more expensive instruments that are noted as coming with a lightweight hardcase, this also depends on what we have in stock, and what your chosen instrument will fit into. We usually are selecting from Gewa Air, Otto Musica, Eastman or Century Strings cases in the $1,000 - $1,400 price range. We usually give you a couple options of case and color.
