An easy-to-play, well-balanced instrument that responds readily to the bow. The sound is clean, clear, and colorful across the range.
This beautifully maintained French cello from the early 1800s has been played and cared for lovingly, unlike many instruments of this age. It has had a previous neck replacement with scroll graft, but is otherwise free of major repair work. The stunning one-piece back displays unusual diagonal flaming, matched beautifully by the ribs. This Augustin Claudot has been professionally set up by Linda and is ready to play. A true player's instrument, with plenty of power and color.
Augustin Claudot (1776–1843) Mirecourt, France
Augustin Claudot was born into one of Mirecourt's great violin-making dynasties, the elder son of the established maker Charles Claudot. He trained under his father and inherited not only the family's skill but also a distinctive workshop habit: rather than pasting a paper label inside his instruments, Claudot identified his work with a brand stamped directly into the wood, reading simply "AUGUSTIN CLAUDOT," with no location included. This practice, passed down from his father, has since become one of the most recognizable hallmarks of an authentic Claudot instrument.
Claudot's instruments are typically built on a generous pattern, finished in a warm, light orange varnish, and crafted from good quality tonewood with careful, precise workmanship. Collectors and players have long noted the Claudot family's instruments for their power and depth of voice — qualities that carry through in this example.
His legacy continued through his son, Paul Claudot (1805–1888), who trained in Augustin's workshop and went on to become one of the most respected names in the Mirecourt tradition.
Today, instruments bearing the Claudot brand are actively collected and traded, appearing in major violin archives and at auction houses internationally, prized for their craftsmanship and the rich, resonant sound characteristic of the family's work.

Buying a Cello Online from Linda West Cellos
All of our cellos (except for those on consignment or mezzo-forte instruments) come with a 14-day trial period. Once you receive your new cello, play it for 2 weeks, and if it's not "the one", contact us to discuss a return or replacement. For best results during your trial period, we recommend putting your current instrument away and playing only the trial instrument for the full 2 weeks. This allows you to properly adjust to the new instrument's muscle memory, voice and characteristics without constant comparison.
All trial returns must be coordinated with Linda West Cellos prior to arranging shipping. We will provide specific packing instructions and monitor weather conditions along the shipping route. Instruments or bows shipped back without authorization may not be eligible for refund if damaged. Shipping costs back to us are the buyer's responsibility.

Most cellos will come with a case and a bow. If you are shopping from a distance, Linda will select the most compatible bow for your cello by playing the instrument and trying out several bows. As for cases, most cellos will come with a standard hard case, which really depends on the availability. For more expensive instruments that are noted as coming with a lightweight hard case, this also depends on what we have in stock, and what your chosen instrument will fit into. We usually are selecting from Gewa Air, Otto Musica, BAM or Musilia cases in the $1,000 - $1,400 price range. We usually give you a couple options of case and color.
We know that purchasing a cello online takes an incredible amount of trust, knowledge, and information. Therefore, we go the extra mile to make sure that you have as much information about your future cello soulmate as we can possibly provide. We would love to talk to you before you put that cello in your cart and purchase it so we can help you make sure it's going to be the right one for you. Unlike big, 'volume' shops, we are intimately familiar with each cello we have listed, and are experts at cello/player match-making. We are very passionate about making sure you receive the cello that is going to make your playing blossom, and put a smile on your face every time you play.
