Model '1717 Rogeri'

Seattle, Washington; 2023
Master Grade

This Rogeri is beautifully balanced across the register, with a complex and colorful tone to play around with. It plays smoothly, and speaks easily, with a nice, chocolatey growl on the lows, and a reedy sizzle on the highs. Responsive and malleable, it will still require a player with an advanced bow arm to get the best of it. Thumb position is responsive and easy to play.  Oil varnished, it will continue to open up as it is played in. Best partner for a serious advancing college student or professional.

I special ordered this instrument, and Jason Starkie kindly hand-delivered it to our shop recently. This compact full-size cello is one of our favorite, unique finds. The petite 1717 Rogeri pattern is just slightly smaller than most full-sizes. Despite its size, this finely made instrument possesses a rich tone with superb projection and a colorful, complex sound. So comfortable to play, effortless to maneuver around, and exceptionally responsive to the player's intent – this cello is a dream! With its size being somewhere between a 7/8 and a true full-size, this cello is a perfect compromise for the cellist seeking a more compact cello without losing any of the soloistic sound.

Jason Starkie is a violin maker specializing in making new cellos. He apprenticed with Robert Brewer Young in New York and France. He is an exceptional maker whose instruments reflect the sculptural qualities and harmony of the greatest Old Italians. He is one of the rare contemporary Luthiers whose combination of studied excellence and spontaneity leads to the creation of instruments that are truly made in the spirit of the past masters. He is also at the forefront of high end, acoustic research and exploring ways to apply twenty first century science to the ancient art of instrument making. The resulting sound and playability of his instruments is magnificent.

This is a fine example of this contemporary maker's talents. Completely hand-made by one craftsman in the U.S.A. Website: Starkie Lutherie

Buying a Cello Online from Linda West Cellos

All of our cellos (except for those on consignment or mezzo-forte instruments) come with a 14-day trial period. Once you receive your new cello, play it for 2 weeks, and if it's not "the one", contact us to discuss a return or replacement. Shipping costs back to us are the buyer's responsibility. Please see our FAQs for complete details.

Most cellos will come with a case and a bow. If you are shopping from a distance, Linda will select the most compatible bow for your cello by playing the instrument and trying out several bows. As for cases, most cellos will come with a standard hard case, which really depends on the availability. We often use Eastman CACL28 or CACL18 cases as our standard case. For more expensive instruments that are noted as coming with a lightweight hardcase, this also depends on what we have in stock, and what your chosen instrument will fit into. We usually are selecting from Gewa Air, Otto Musica, Eastman or Century Strings cases in the $1,000 - $1,400 price range. We usually give you a couple options of case and color.

We know that purchasing a cello online takes an incredible amount of trust, knowledge, and information. Therefore, we go the extra mile to make sure that you have as much information about your future cello soulmate as we can possibly provide. We would love to talk to you before you put that cello in your cart and purchase it so we can help you make sure it's going to be the right one for you. Unlike big, 'volume' shops, we are intimately familiar with each cello we have listed, and are experts at cello/player match-making. We are very passionate about making sure you receive the cello that is going to make your playing blossom, and put a smile on your face every time you play.
